Why I deliver 10 frames, not 300

I'm often asked for the same reassurance: “How many photos do I get?”. It's an honest question, but the wrong one. The number reassures everyone and satisfies no one. I've chosen to work exactly the opposite way - few frames, carefully chosen - and I have good reasons for it.

Three hundred photos aren't a gift. They're a chore. Someone has to open them, go through them one by one, decide which ones matter. Most of the time, no one does. The folder stays on a hard drive, untouched, like a promise no one keeps. Ten frames, on the other hand, you remember. One ends up on the wall. That's the difference between an archive and a memory.

Selection is the work, not the shutter

Anyone can press the button three hundred times. The hard part isn't taking photos - it's looking at them the next day and throwing away 95% without regret. That's where the author shows: not in how much he catches, but in how much he has the courage to cut. A photographer who delivers everything he shot hasn't finished the job; he's handed you the decision he should have made himself.

I do take hundreds of frames on a shoot - of course, I'm chasing the moment. But you never see them. You see the result after I've gone through it all and kept only what stands on its own, without explanations, without “look, this one almost worked”.

I don't cover the day. I choose the moment worth remembering.
A low-light portrait - the single frame kept out of dozens
A single frame kept out of more than forty. The rest were correct. This one was true.

What you gain by receiving less

It sounds like a paradox, but the constraint works in your favour. When you know you're not pouring out volume, you look through the viewfinder differently. You wait. You let the moment come instead of forcing it. And in the end, what you get has a quality that quantity can't buy:

  • Coherence. Ten frames that speak the same language, not three hundred that contradict each other.
  • The decision made. I don't leave you to hunt for “the best one”. I give it to you directly.
  • Weight. Every image matters, because it isn't hiding among others.

This isn't less work. It's more - I just do it, not you. You pay for the eye that chooses, not the shutter that pours.

If you want a full folder, there are studios that do that excellently and that's perfectly fine. But if you want ten frames you'll keep on the wall ten years from now, then we speak the same language. You order the vision, not the quantity - and that's exactly why I deliver little, but good.
